Focus on your breath

I was at the gym yesterday working out on the elliptical machine. My heart rate was up to 130 after about twenty minutes of exercise, and I wanted to see how much I could lower my heart rate by just focusing on my breath. When I focused on my breath, I would inhale for three seconds and then exhale for three seconds, over and over again. Within about thirty seconds, I was able to lower my heart rate to 120. Of course, I would forget to focus on my breath after awhile and my heart rate would be back up to 130 or even a little bit higher. But again I would focus on my breath and get my heart rate down to 120.

Remember the power of a simple breathing exercise, and how it can easily and quickly help you to feel more calm, relaxed, grounded, and energized.

Karma

I recently did a favor for a good friend of mine and, right afterward, I went to a local coffeeshop to get my morning cup. I realized, when I got to the register, that I didn't have enough money on me to pay for it. The man behind me overheard me talking to the barista about this, and he offered to pay for my coffee for me. I was so grateful for this random act of kindness. Then, I thought about karma, and how I had just helped my friend. I am comforted by the idea that kind gestures come back to you in various forms. What I put out there came right back to me.

A memorable quote

"Making friends with our own demons and their accompanying insecurity leads to a very simple, understated relaxation and joy."

Self-care

This past Friday, I made it to the gym after a full day at work. I was a little tired when I got there, but I knew that I would feel better afterward. And I did. I think that getting to the gym is "half of the work", and doing your work out is the other half of the work. It isn't always easy (in fact, it usually isn't!) to squeeze in exercise during a busy week, but I remind myself that it is more important than ever to go to the gym during a busy week. It is good for my physical health and mental well-being, and the benefits fully outweigh the hour it takes from my day.

New Year's Resolution

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, because I don't believe in waiting for the start of the new year to begin a life-changing intention. But this year I have decided to dedicate myself to regular yoga classes. I have found yoga to be a very useful tool, and helps bring out the best in me. It is in the stillness and quiet where I can continue to feel grounded and energized. I don't think yoga is for everyone though. What helps bring out the best in you? How can you incorporate this more into your daily life?

"Happy" Holidays

As I prepare myself for the coming holiday season, I catch myself trying to find the "perfect" gift for my loved ones. Then I realize that there is no real "perfect" gift, and this realization helps bring things into focus. What is your goal for the holidays this year? To connect with loved ones? To have a relaxing holiday? To stay within your budget? To keep things simple?

When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed during the holidays, focus on your goal. This can help keep things in perspective for you, especially when it feels like the holidays are becoming to be chaotic.
